Joe Calzaghe v Mark Delaney (1996) – Original Fight Image
On 20 April 1996, Joe Calzaghe made the first defence of his British super-middleweight title against the unbeaten Mark Delaney at the International Centre in Brentwood, Essex. Both men were unbeaten, with Calzaghe at 16–0 and Delaney at 21–0. Calzaghe's promoter lost the purse bid, so the fight went to Delaney's home territory and a hostile crowd. Calzaghe knocked Delaney down in the first minute and the fight was stopped in the fifth round. Calzaghe later went on to unify the WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight titles.
