About Selling The Fight
Selling The Fight – The Art of British Boxing Posters is a 300-page hardback of more than 100 original fight posters and flyers from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. It was compiled by Mitch Gray and Charlie Palmer and published by Kingsley Publishing in September 2026.
How we met
We met 34 years ago, introduced by our girlfriends, who were best friends. They became our wives, and later our ex-wives, but the friendship stuck.
Boxing fans since childhood
We've both loved boxing since we were kids, growing up on BBC Sportsnight on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Those nights gave us the fighters, the rivalries and the big occasions that this book is built around.
How the book began
We realised how many posters and flyers we had. Not a few, but a lot. We looked for a book that covered them and couldn't find one, and we still can't. As far as we know, nobody had put together a book like this, so we decided to make it ourselves. It took around two and a half to three years, but there was no deadline and no rush, so we took our time and got it right.
Where the posters came from
Over the years we tracked them down wherever they turned up: eBay, auctions, fellow collectors, vintage shops and more. And we're still collecting.
Why posters?
Because you can touch them. You can feel the paper, smell the age on it and hold a piece of a night that happened decades ago. Before social media and online advertising, this is how a fight was sold, and no screen will ever do it justice.
