Carlos Palomino v John H. Stracey (1976) – Original Fight Image

On 22 June 1976, WBC welterweight champion John H. Stracey defended his title against Mexico's Carlos Palomino at the Empire Pool, Wembley, in the middle of the great heatwave summer of 1976. Stracey had won the title in Mexico City against the great Jose Napoles, and this was his third world title fight in six months. Palomino's sustained body attack wore him down, and referee Sid Nathan stopped the fight in the twelfth round to make Palomino world champion.
